# Launch and run a sequence

> Add contacts, launch, watch the sequence run, pause, resume, archive or duplicate it, and edit it while it runs.

This page covers what you do once a sequence is written: add contacts, launch, watch it run and control it. To write the emails first, see [Build a sequence](https://docs.dealtoaster.io/guides/sequences.md).

## Add contacts

On the sequence, select **Add contacts**, tick the contacts you want and confirm. Only active contacts can be added, and each one starts at step 1. In a draft sequence they start when you launch it. You can also tick contacts on **Contacts** and select **Add to sequence**.

The dialog then says "N contacts added" and shows what happened to each contact:

| Result | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Enrolled** | The contact is in the sequence. |
| **Already in this sequence** | Nothing to do. |
| **Not active (unsubscribed, bounced, do not contact or no email)** | The contact cannot be emailed. |
| **Replied in the last 30 days** | The contact answered recently. Select **Enroll them anyway** to add only those contacts. |
| **Missing data for step 1** | A variable of the first email has no value and no fallback. Fill in the contact or add a fallback. |

## Launch

Select **Launch** on the sequence, then **Launch sequence**. Step 1 is scheduled for every enrolled contact within the sending window, and later steps follow their delays.

If something blocks the launch, the dialog says **Fix these before launching** and lists each problem with a link to the fix:

* Choose a mailbox to send from.
* The mailbox is paused or needs reconnecting.
* Add the first email.
* A step's template has an error.
* A condition's rule is not valid.
* The window and limits leave no time to send.

If **Stop when the contact replies** is on and the mailbox cannot detect replies, the dialog also asks you to tick **I understand follow-ups will not stop on replies**.

## After you launch

DealToaster sends step 1 within the sending window and each later step after its delay. It stays inside the mailbox's daily limit and minimum gap. If the mailbox reaches its daily limit, the sequence shows "Limit reached, next send at" with the time. If the mailbox is paused or needs reconnecting, it shows **Mailbox paused.** or a "Reconnect" banner with the address, and nothing is sent until you fix it.

## Watch it run

The **Overview** tab shows **Enrolled**, **Active**, **Scheduled**, **Sent**, **Replied**, **Bounced**, **Needs attention**, **Finished** and the next send. Below, the contacts table can be filtered by **All**, **Active**, **Paused**, **Needs attention**, **Replied**, **Finished**, **Stopped**, **Unsubscribed**, **Bounced** and **Failed**. Select a row to open its timeline, which lists everything that happened to that contact in the sequence.

## Pause, resume and archive

* **Pause** stops the sending: contacts stop getting emails and their scheduled sends are cancelled until you resume.
* **Resume** continues from where each contact stopped, inside the sending window and the mailbox limits.
* **Archive sequence** stops every contact still in it, cancels scheduled emails and makes the sequence read-only. It cannot be undone, and an archived sequence keeps its numbers in Reports.
* **Delete** (from the sequences list; an active sequence must be paused first, because "An active sequence cannot be deleted; pause it first") removes the sequence with its steps, enrollments and their history. Messages already sent are kept. Its numbers leave Reports, so archive it instead if you want to keep them.

## Stop or resume one contact

In the contacts table, open a row's menu to **Stop for this contact**: they get no more emails from this sequence and their scheduled email is cancelled. This cannot be undone. A contact who needs attention, or is paused, can be resumed from the same menu, or with **Skip this step and resume** to move past the step that failed. The sequence must be active to resume a contact.

## Duplicate a sequence

Select **Duplicate** to create a draft named after the original with "(copy)". It copies the settings and every step, but not the contacts, the numbers or the history. If the original's mailbox is disconnected, or its sending window no longer overlaps the sequence's window on a shared working day, the copy has no mailbox until you choose one. While you have unsaved edits the button is off with the hint "Save your changes first".

## Edit a running sequence

While a sequence is active, **Steps** says "This sequence is live." ("This sequence is paused." when it is paused) and "Saved edits apply to the emails that have not gone out yet and to contacts who reach a condition later." What you can change:

| Change | What happens |
| - | - |
| Subject or body of an email | Applies to every send that has not happened yet. |
| Delay of a step | Waiting contacts move to the new time. Changing the delay of step 1 moves no one. |
| Add an email at the end | Running contacts reach it; contacts who already finished stay finished. |
| Add an email in the middle | Contacts already past that point do not get it. |
| Delete an email | Emails already sent stay sent; the later steps move up and waiting contacts move on to the next step. |
| A condition's rule | Applies to contacts who reach the condition afterwards. |
| The mailbox, the order of the steps, adding or removing a condition | Not possible after launch. |

A launched sequence keeps at least one step. If you delete a step while it is being sent, you see "A send of this step is in progress." Try again in a few seconds; your edit is kept.

## The sequences list

**Sequences** lists every sequence with tabs for **All**, **Active**, **Paused**, **Drafts** and **Archived**, a search, a **Mailbox** filter, a sort menu and a columns menu for **People**, **Sent**, **Replies**, **Bounces** and **Next send**. An active or paused sequence has a switch to pause or resume it. Tick rows to pause, resume, duplicate, archive or delete several at once; each action says how many sequences it applies to.
